What golf ball does Rory McIlroy use?
Updated October 2026
The TaylorMade TP5, 2026 model, as of October 2026.
McIlroy played the firmer TP5x for years, then moved to the TP5 in 2025. National Club Golfer’s Masters bag comparison shows the 2024 TP5 in his 2025 Masters win and the 2026 TP5 in his 2026 win. TaylorMade’s stated reason for the switch was the TP5’s slightly lower flight and softer feel.
The TP5 is a 5-piece ball: a soft inner core, three progressively firmer mantle layers, and a cast urethane cover. The TP5x uses the same build with a firmer feel, higher launch, and lower driver spin. In our catalog the TP5 gauges 93 compression and the TP5x 98.
The switch is a useful lesson for amateurs. McIlroy is among the fastest swingers in golf and still chose the softer of the two tour balls, because flight and feel drove the decision. Our TP5 vs TP5x guide applies the same logic to normal swing speeds.
