Do low compression golf balls go straighter?

Updated October 2026

Spin aims the ball. The compression number only changes how it feels and how fast it leaves the face.

A slice or hook comes from a tilted spin axis, and for the same tilt, a ball with less total spin curves less. Most low-compression balls are two-piece designs with a firm ionomer cover, and that combination produces low driver spin. That is why they earn the “straight” reputation, and why a soft urethane tour ball with the same compression number can still curve plenty.

If curve is your problem, look for the ball’s spin profile rather than its compression. Our catalog tags each ball low, mid, or high spin. The low-spin two-piece balls tend to curve least; you will give up some wedge grip around the green in return.
