The longest ball carries your miss farther too
Curvature scales with carry. Every number below follows from that one relationship.
TrackMan publishes the numbers directly: a 2° spin axis produces about 2.2 yards of curve on a 150-yard shot and about 3 yards on a 200-yard shot. Push the axis to 10° and the same pair reads about 11 yards and about 15 yards. Same tilt, longer flight, more sideways travel. Their face-to-path page carries the driver version of the same point: “One degree Face to Path difference at 300 yards will produce a shot with 12 yards of curve.” Ten degrees of spin axis buys 11 yards of curve on a 150-yard shot; one degree of face-to-path buys 12 on a drive.
The gain and the penalty scale together. Five extra yards on a 250-yard drive is about 2% more carry, so the same swing fault curves about 2% further offline as well. That’s a small number on its own, and it arrives on top of a starting direction the ball never touched. The tree line does not move to accommodate the upgrade.
Distance and dispersion arrive on the same swing, and only one of them shows up in the marketing.
The distance gap you’re chasing is mostly not there
MyGolfSpy ran 48 balls through a robot at three driver speeds in 2026, on Trackman, with a Titleist Pro V1 control ball hit in every group. The distance spreads are smaller than the category suggests.

MyGolfSpy reports the low- and high-speed driver figures as the test median across all balls and the mid-speed figure as the test average, so the middle row is not strictly comparable to the other two.
At their mid-speed condition, MyGolfSpy’s own summary is that “total distance stops separating the field almost entirely.” At the low-speed condition, “barely 11 yards” covered all 48 balls, top to bottom — and that is the full field, longest to shortest, not the gap between two balls you would actually be choosing between.
Only at 116 mph does the field thin out, and 116 mph is a tour-level swing. The recreational golfer reading a “longest ball” list is usually somewhere between 85 and 100 — which is to say, in the two conditions where the robot could barely tell the balls apart.
Below tour speed, then, you’re choosing between balls a robot can’t reliably separate on distance, using a criterion that won’t change your card, while ignoring the one that will.
Low spin straightens the drive and costs you the green
Sideways spin is total spin multiplied by the sine of the spin-axis tilt. Cut total spin and the sideways component shrinks with it, so a low-spin ball curves less for the same tilt. The physics is straightforward and MyGolfSpy calls the resulting advice sound.
They attach two caveats worth more than the advice.
The first is consistency. In their 2026 test FAQ they write that “ionomer balls are often less consistent than top-tier urethane offerings. It’s a detail that can quickly erase the on-paper accuracy advantage of low-spin models.” Most cheap low-spin balls are ionomer. The straightness you bought on the box gets handed back in shot-to-shot variance.
The second is the rest of the golf course. “Many balls with true low-spin properties off the driver are also low-spin off irons and often low-spin as you move closer to the green,” they note, which “may impede your ability to control the ball and hold greens on shorter shots.” A tee shot 3 yards straighter and an approach that releases 20 feet past the pin is a bad trade for anyone who scores with wedges.

The dispersion nobody puts on the box
A ball can fly offline without any help from your swing, and the numbers are larger than the spin differences golfers argue about.

The 2026 test took this seriously enough to change its methodology. MyGolfSpy stopped removing outliers — “with one of our goals this year being to provide meaningful dispersion data, we did not remove outliers as we have in the past” — and then declined to recommend models that produced above-average dispersion, excluding “balls with overly large dispersion patterns” from their picks. An accuracy-minded buyer should read their recommendation list as a dispersion filter that has already been applied.
Their finding on where quality is heading is good news: the share of balls posting poor quality scores has roughly halved over five years, and the bottom of the market is rising faster than the top. They still found bad balls this year.
What “straightest” is not allowed to mean
Balls that actually correct a slice exist, and they’re illegal.
The USGA Equipment Rules require that a ball “must not be designed, manufactured or intentionally modified to have properties that differ from those of a spherically symmetric ball.” The USGA has reaffirmed that “balls that self-correct, balls that are designed with the intent to self-correct, or balls that otherwise produce unusually less hook or slice compared to traditional and customary golf balls will be considered non-conforming.” Design intent alone fails the test, whether or not the ball works.

Which leaves the conforming market with one honest lever: reduce the spin that produces the curve, symmetrically, and build the ball consistently. Bridgestone’s e12 Straight (~66) is the clearest example — a three-piece surlyn ball with a sidespin-reducing mantle aimed at 75–95 mph players fighting a curve. It’s a conforming ball making a modest, legal claim, priced at $34.99 instead of tour money.
The error the ball cannot touch
A ball change adjusts the curve. It does not move where the shot starts.
TrackMan quantifies the delivery term: “One degree Face to Path difference at 300 yards will produce a shot with 12 yards of curve,” and they note a typical PGA Tour fairway is only 30–32 yards wide. On their spin-axis scale, anything between −2° and +2° is difficult to see as curvature at all. One degree of delivery error creates more offline movement than the entire spin difference between a distance ball and a tour ball.

Both matter. Only one of them is your limiting factor, and the answer is usually visible in your own round.
