Why this test carries weight

MyGolfSpy takes no manufacturer money for its ball testing, which is the entire reason its rankings mean something that a brand’s own launch claims don’t. The 2026 edition tested 48 balls with a robot at three swing speeds, on a driver and a 7-iron, plus a separate greenside wedge test.

Robot testing removes the variable that makes human ball testing nearly useless: your own shot-to-shot scatter is larger than the difference between most balls. Strip that out and small, real differences become measurable.

1. Iron distance is a spin story

The single most useful finding, and the one most likely to change how you shop.

Off the driver, ball speed and distance track together the way you’d expect. Off a 7-iron, that relationship collapses. MyGolfSpy measured about 1.5 mph between the fastest and slowest ball in the field, and more than 10 yards between the longest and shortest. As they put it, “a mile and a half per hour doesn’t buy 10 yards, at least not without significant help from spin.”

The proof is the winner. The longest 7-iron they measured at high speed, the Bridgestone Tour B RX (~89), ranked 43rd out of 48 for ball speed. Balls that kept spin down carried farther. Balls that spun most handed the yardage back regardless of how fast they left the face.

2. Price buys spin, not distance

MyGolfSpy’s framing: “Price and greenside spin track each other closely. Price and distance barely track at all.”

At high swing speed the expensive balls were longer. Drop to a slower swing and that gap all but disappears, and off the 7-iron price told them almost nothing. What the extra $35 a dozen actually buys is wedge performance, which is a reasonable thing to buy given how many wedge shots you hit in a round.

This reframes the value question, and the reframing is ours rather than theirs. On their numbers, what a Titleist Pro V1 (~92) at $57.99 buys over a $20 ball at 90 mph is greenside spin rather than yards. The footnote here is the Costco ball. 3. Ionomer keeps up until it’s wet

The most nuanced finding, and the one that most changes the urethane vs. ionomer conversation.

MyGolfSpy splits ionomer balls into soft and not-soft. The soft ones exist to serve golfers who want soft feel and behave least like urethane. The firmer ones are the surprise: the Titleist Tour Soft (~88) and, to a lesser degree, the Vice Tour (~98) “perform much more like urethane under most conditions.” Tour Soft was a top-10 spinner through the 7-iron at every speed tested.

Then the conditions change. MyGolfSpy’s wet-versus-dry wedge comparison found that on a wet full wedge shot, the ionomer balls gave up nearly a third of their spin, while the urethane balls gave up about a tenth. On their 35-yard greenside test, urethane averaged roughly 1,250 rpm more spin than ionomer across the 48-ball field — the largest cover-related difference they measure anywhere. That field average sits below the 2,000–3,500 rpm range typically quoted for a full wedge shot, because a 35-yard pitch generates less spin than a full swing to begin with. So a firm ionomer ball is a legitimate full-swing option on a dry day, and a liability in dew, rain, or out of wet rough. That’s a weather and short-game decision more than a budget one.

4. Flight changes from club to club

A ball that flies high off the driver may fly through a completely different window off your irons.

The example MyGolfSpy leads with is the Srixon Z-Star Diamond (~93): among the highest-flying balls off the driver and among the lowest and most penetrating off irons. A top-10 driver flight and a bottom-three iron flight, at every speed tested.

The practical consequence is that fitting a ball on one club can point you at the wrong one. If you’ve ever picked a ball off a launch monitor session that only used a driver, this is the finding to sit with. What you need off the tee may not be what you need into greens, and the box tells you neither.

5. Driver distance shouldn’t be the decider

Related, and worth stating plainly because ball marketing works so hard against it.

MyGolfSpy is careful not to overclaim: balls don’t all fly the same distance off the driver, and pretending otherwise “isn’t real.” But the measurable gaps shrink as speed drops, and the launch and spin you personally bring to impact move the result enough that your longest ball may not be someone else’s.

6. Balls change between releases, quietly

Two examples from this year’s field, pointing in opposite directions.

The new TaylorMade TP5 (~93) is the best MyGolfSpy has measured in several years, with driver spin varying about half as much shot to shot as the previous version and tighter numbers through the irons and wedge. Genuine, unadvertised improvement in consistency.

The Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash (~105) went the other way. It still profiles as the low-spin distance option, but it no longer measures longer than the control ball the way it did last time, and it flies a tick lower and spins a bit more. Same ball, same side stamp, different numbers. MyGolfSpy’s comment: “Go figure. The only constant is change.”

The takeaway for you is small but real: a ball you fitted into three years ago may not be the ball currently in the box.

7. Quality has risen, mostly at the bottom

The market-wide finding. MyGolfSpy’s lab-gauge data shows the worst balls it measures today are meaningfully better than the worst it measured five years ago, and the share of balls posting genuinely poor quality scores has roughly halved.

Two honest caveats they attach to it. They still found bad examples in 2026, so this is a rising floor rather than a solved problem. And averages conceal the variation that only shows up in the distribution charts, so a good mean doesn’t guarantee the ball you pull from the sleeve.

Still, the direction matters if you’ve been avoiding value balls on build quality alone. That reason is weaker than it was.
