What an online fitting decides

An online fitting sorts the 1,000-plus balls on the USGA conforming list down to one ball by answering four questions in order: what cover you need, how much spin and what flight, what compression bracket, and what you’ll pay. Swing speed is where the launch monitor pays off. TrackMan’s amateur data puts the average male amateur at 94 mph, a bogey golfer at 92, a 10-handicap at 95, and scratch at 110; female amateurs run 79 mph at a 15 handicap to 90 at scratch. Those brackets sit close together, and a golfer who remembers a 250-yard drive from a firm, downwind par 5 will type “100+ mph” into a questionnaire when a radar would read 92. That mistake pushes you toward a firmer ball than you need.

How to get your inputs right at home

  1. Run a three-chip test. Drop three balls just off a practice green and pitch them 15–20 yards to a hole with the ball you play now. Watch the landing: stops within a step, hops and rolls a few feet, or keeps going. That one observation is the input every good fitter weighs most.
  2. Estimate swing speed from carry, not total. Hit 10 drives on a range with real carry markers or a rangefinder, throw out the mishits, take the middle number. Divide carry in yards by about 2.2: a 200-yard carry lands near 90 mph, 180 near 82, 220 near 100.   4. Set a budget you’ll keep. Tour urethane is $50–$58 a dozen. Mistakes that wreck an online fitting

  • Typing in your best drive. Total distance on a firm downwind hole runs 30–40 yards past your everyday carry. Use a median carry number or you’ll be fit into a compression tier you can’t compress.
  • Answering “stops fast” because you wish it did. The fitter is asking what the ball does now, with your current ball. Honest answers about run-out are what route you to urethane.
  • Running one brand tool and stopping. That finds the best ball in one catalog, which is a different question from the best ball for you.
  • Ignoring the budget question. A fit you won’t keep buying is a fit that lasts a month. Value urethane exists for this reason.
