The compression labels run backwards

Snell sells the PR3 as the softer ball at 80-85 compression and the PR4 as the firmer one at 85-90. Two independent labs put a gauge on the PR3, and both read it firmer than Snell’s published ceiling. Only one of them measured the PR4 as well, and that one has the ranking backwards.

Plugged In Golf measured 24 balls of each model. The PR3 averaged 91.08 with a median of 91.5 and a spread from 84 to 95. The PR4 averaged 88.96 with a median of 89 and a spread from 85 to 92. On that data the PR3 is about two points firmer than the ball Snell markets above it. MyGolfSpy’s Ball Lab put the PR3 at 88 across its own 36-ball sample, which is still three points above Snell’s published ceiling.

Snell’s answer is a fair one as far as it goes. In its own compression accuracy post the company points out that testers use different gauges, deflection amounts and measurement methods, and argues that “a small difference in compression does not automatically mean a meaningful difference in performance.” Both points are true. Neither explains why the one lab that measured both models on the same gauge, on the same day, put the PR3 above the PR4 when Snell’s own chart puts it below.

For a fitting decision this matters in one specific way: if you picked the PR3 because you wanted the softer of the two tour balls, you may have bought the firmer one. The compression chart shows where both land against the calibrated field.

Snell PR4: top of the distance table, at one speed

The headline result of the whole Snell range belongs to the PR4 (~89). At MyGolfSpy’s 116 mph driver condition, seven balls finished in a statistical tie for total distance with none breaking away, and the PR4 measured longest of that group. Size the tie before you get excited. The Maxfli Tour X, TaylorMade Tour Response and Pro V1x all landed within three yards of it, so “longest” here means top of a cluster rather than a gap. A $34.99 four-piece direct-to-consumer ball sitting at the top of that cluster is still a serious result, and it got there while spinning 2,281 rpm off the driver, below the field median.

Flight is where it separates. The PR4 peaked above 91 feet alongside the Pro V1x and the Mizuno Pro X, more than five feet above the test median, which is a lot of air for a ball Snell describes as its lower-flighted model.

The same aerodynamics stop working one speed down. At the 102 mph condition the PR4’s peak height barely moved while its ball speed dropped, and it fell to near the bottom of a distance table where 22 of the 48 balls tied at the top. MyGolfSpy addresses the PR4 by name in its methodology notes: the aero package creates a distance advantage at fast conditions but has nothing to work with at mid speed. Plugged In Golf reached the same conclusion from a different direction, finding ball-speed consistency became a problem for slower swings and calling the PR4 a ball for players who are “very fast or fast with excellent contact.”

Buy the PR4 if you’re clearing 105 mph with the driver and striking it cleanly. Below that, its best quality is the one you can’t use.

Snell PR3: a perfect quality rate and a last-place finish

The PR3 (~91) is the ball Snell aims at the largest group of golfers, and it is the one that comes off worst in the 2026 testing.

At the 102 mph driver condition the PR3 flew nearly as high as it did at 116 mph, giving up just over a foot of peak height while losing close to 20 mph of ball speed. Same trajectory, no speed underneath it, and it finished dead last of 48 balls for total distance. That is the mid-speed golfer Snell built the ball for.

Last place needs its context, and the context makes it worse rather than better. MyGolfSpy notes that total distance almost stops separating the field at this speed: 22 of the 48 balls finished in the top statistical group, against only 7 at the fast condition. Missing a group that wide is the finding. At the low-speed iron condition the PR3 also sat at the bottom for ball speed alongside the Maxfli Tour X LS (~97), Srixon Z-Star Diamond (~93) and Mizuno Pro S, all firm urethane models. Don’t read much into that one: the entire iron field spanned 1.3 mph, and MyGolfSpy’s own note is that the balls at the bottom of that table are barely slower than the ones at the top.

Its greenside number complicates the case further. Across the field, urethane balls averaged roughly 1,250 rpm more greenside spin than ionomer ones, the largest cover-related gap MyGolfSpy measures. The PR3 was then named as one of three urethane balls that spun less than the highest-spinning ionomer ball in the test, sharing that distinction with the Kirkland Performance+ White and the PXG Xtreme Tour (~94). That bar sits lower than it sounds. The best ionomer ball on the greenside table was the Srixon Soft Feel, and it still ranked 36th of 48 and spun roughly 1,400 rpm behind the leaders. MyGolfSpy’s own phrasing is that being the highest-spinning ionomer isn’t the same as being a high-spin ball. Failing to clear it is what makes the PR3’s number bad. Plugged In Golf measured its full-wedge spin a couple hundred rpm below average and its iron spin a couple hundred rpm below average too. A urethane cover buys you the option of greenside spin, and the cover comparison explains why, but the PR3 spends its budget on flight instead.

Where it wins is launch. The PR3 was the highest-launching urethane model on the 35-yard wedge and seventh overall across all 48 balls. That rank is worth more than most in this post, because the greenside wedge is the one condition where the field spreads out: MyGolfSpy measured nearly eight degrees between the highest- and lowest-launching ball there, against a degree and a half or less at every other condition. If you fight a low, running wedge and want a ball that gets up quickly, that is a real fit.

The Ball Lab card

MyGolfSpy tore down 36 PR3s in August 2026 and the report card splits down the middle:

  • Good Ball Rate: 100%. Zero defects across all 36 balls, the best possible result and a direct answer to the Prime 3.0 quality collapse that preceded this line.
  • Compression consistency: A-minus. A delta of 5.3 points across a spread of 84.5 to 89.8, against a database average of 9.7. Top 10 of every ball Ball Lab has tested.
  • Compression symmetry: F. An average of 5.5 points of deviation against a field average of 1.9. Ball to ball the sample is tight; within each individual ball, compression is distributed unevenly.
  • Diameter C+, weight C. Average on both, and every ball cleared the USGA minimum diameter and maximum weight.

The overall score of 80 and B-minus grade does not earn a MyGolfSpy quality recommendation, and symmetry is the reason. One more detail worth knowing: all 36 balls measured thicker at the pole than at the seam, a uniform lot-wide pattern rather than a few outliers. There is no published 2026 Ball Lab card for the PR4, so the PR3’s is the only manufacturing data Snell currently has on the board.

Snell Prime 2.0: real urethane at $18.99, zero robot data

The Prime 2.0 (~82) is the most interesting ball Snell sells and the least documented. Snell lists it as a two-piece build with an XV3 cast-urethane cover and an 80-85 compression range, fit to golfers whose 7-iron carries 125 yards or less. A cast-urethane cover under $20 a dozen is close to a category of one.

Check the sourcing on the praise this ball gets, including the line we ran in an earlier draft. MyGolfSpy’s only piece on this ball is a June 2024 closer look that ends with the line “this article was written in partnership with Snell.” It calls the Prime 2.0 “a bit of a golf ball unicorn” and the most interesting of the PRIME family, and even that sponsored write-up lands a real caveat: without the firm mantle layer of a three- or four-piece build, “you’re not going to see as much spin as you would in a ball with what’s often described as Tour-level construction,” and mid-to-faster swingers are “likely to suffer a significant performance penalty (most notably ball speed).”

It was not in the 2026 robot test. No independent lab has published driver, iron or wedge numbers for it, and Snell’s own claim that its wedge spin lands within roughly 74 rpm of a Pro V1 comes from Snell’s testing rather than an outside one. Treat that number as a manufacturer claim.

The structural argument still holds up. Urethane balls gave up about a tenth of their spin on a wet full wedge in the 2026 test while ionomer balls gave up nearly a third, so the cover material buys you something measurable in bad weather regardless of which specific ball you pick. At $18.99 the Prime 2.0 is the cheapest way into that in Snell’s range, and it sits well inside the value field.

Snell Get Sum: straight and cheap, no help around the green

The Get Sum (~67) is the honest budget ball: two pieces, a Surlyn ionomer blend cover, 65-70 compression, $18.99, and 4.8 stars from around 970 buyers on Snell’s own site.

Golf Monthly’s review matches what the construction predicts. Distance and trajectory off the tee were impressive and very consistent through the top of the bag. Around the green it was not receptive, lacking touch on chips and pitches and rolling out, and it scuffed relatively easily out of bunkers. Golfalot’s GC2 work put its driver spin nearly 200 rpm below Snell’s own tour ball on a lower flight, measured at 100 mph of swing speed, which is the low-spin design doing its job. Golfalot’s closing caveat is worth carrying too: the direct-to-consumer discount that makes Snell’s tour balls compelling is much thinner down here, where the value shelf is already crowded.

That is a fair trade at this price for a golfer who loses strokes off the tee rather than around the green. If your scoring problem is inside 50 yards, the urethane Prime 2.0 sits at the same $18.99, so the switch costs you nothing.

What the evidence supports

Four claims survive the data, and two common ones don’t.

  • The PR4 carries the fast-swing case for the brand. It topped a seven-ball tie at 116 mph while the PR3 finished 48th of 48 at 102 mph.
  • Snell’s quality problem is fixed in one dimension and open in another. A 100 percent Good Ball Rate answers the Prime 3.0 disaster. The F on compression symmetry is a fresh problem the PR series brought with it.
  • A urethane cover on a Snell ball is not a promise of greenside spin. The PR3 is the named counterexample in a test where cover material otherwise explained 1,250 rpm.
  • Half the lineup is untested. The Prime 2.0 and Get Sum rest on construction, price and reviewer impressions, which is weaker evidence than a robot table.

Two common claims fail. The PR3 is not the softer of the two tour balls on any gauge that measured both. And its $23 saving against a Titleist Pro V1 (~92) at $57.99 does carry a measured performance cost at mid swing speeds, which is exactly where most golfers who consider the switch are swinging.

Which Snell should you buy?

  • Driver above 105 mph, clean striker: the PR4 at $34.99. The strongest independent result in the range belongs to it, and you’re fast enough to use it.
  • Driver 90 to 105 mph: the Prime 2.0 at $18.99 rather than the PR3. Same cover material, half the price, and the PR3’s own mid-speed result is the argument against it.
  • Driver under 90 mph, greenside spin matters: the Prime 2.0. Snell fits it to 7-iron carries of 125 yards or under, which is this player exactly.
  • Driver under 90 mph, budget first: the Get Sum at $18.99. Straight, long off the tee, durable enough, and you accept the short-game trade going in.
  • You fight a low wedge flight: the PR3 is the one case where its high-launch profile is the feature you want rather than the flaw.
